The Miserable Old Bag & The Video Store

It’s like having the life sucked right out of you Friend

Have you ever been around one of those people that are just so negative that they spread a cloud of misery wherever they go?

Lets face it, the majority of the population spends a good deal of time in a somwhat semi-negative state, but every once in a while you come across someone thats not satisfied with just being miserable, it seems they almost go out of their way to make everyone else unhappy too!

I met one of those people tonight at the video store.

Lucie and I love watching films and whilst before we had Summer we used to go to the cinema at least once per week, alas now its more commonly a weekly visit to our local blockbuster!

As it was a Saturday night, the store was busy, so busy in fact that the queue went all the way from the counter to the back of the store. So whilst I’m waiting in the queue to rent a copy of ‘Last Chance Harvey’ starring Dustin Hoffman (it’s rubbish, don’t get it!), a middle age woman with a face like thunder and her husband joined the queue behind me carrying 4 or 5 DVDs

‘But I don’t like any of these films, and I’ve seen them all!’
‘No you havent’
‘Yes I have, and they’re superhero type films, you know I don’t like those films, why’d you get them?’

and this went on and on and on for the next FIVE minutes;

she didnt like the films,
the type of popcorn they were buying had too much sugar in it,
she hadnt heard from her daughter that day (why is she so selfish?),
the queue was too long (why dont they just put more staff on?),
it was too hot,
why hadnt he changed the bulb in the ensuite like she told him to (it’s not been working for over a week now!)

And then she had a dig at the poor boy at the counter who served her, demanding to know why he couldnt find the DVD she’d picked and why this ‘always happens to me!?’ (he did find her DVD by the way, just not within the first 3 seconds after asking him)

Alas, if I’d been feeling in a more benevolant mood I might have asked her a good quality question to break her state, but I must confess I was actually only too happy to get my DVD and get the hell out of there as fast as I could!

Do you know anyone like that Friend?

Sadly, way too many coaches and trainers also fall in the ‘miserable old bag’ category.

I’m not talking about the odd bad day here, I’m talking about a well conditioned pattern of negativity.

Because as my friend Richard Wilkin’s says ‘Life is a sausage machine’

If you put beef in one end of a sausage machine, you get beef sausages out of the other end

If you put pork in one end of a sausage machine, you get pork sausages

And if you put negativity into one end of your ‘life’ sausage machine, guess what you get out of the other end?

Negativity

Conversely if you put fun, love, joy and laughter into one end of your ‘life’ sausage machine, guess what you get out of the other end?

Fun, love, joy and laughter

It aint exaclty rocket science.

And yet it never ceases to amaze me how many of my fellow coaches and trainers FAIL to apply the ’sausage machine’ principle to attracting new clients to them.

Instead, the sit and bitch about why times are tough, nobody’s got anay money and three thousand other reasons why they will never find another paying client.

So what’s the solution?

It’s really quite simple

Let’s go back to ‘Rapport 101′

‘People like people who are like themselves or who are LIKE WHO THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE!’

In laymans terms, if you are demonstrating the behaviour and the emotional states your client would like to have, they will feel magnetically drawn to you. And the more you personify those states and behaviours, the more attracted towards you they will be.

So if you want to inspire others to step up, live the life of their dreams and achieve their goals, guess what you need to put into your sausage machine?

Oh and as a byproduct, you get to have more fun, joy, happiness, love and laughter in your life too.

It’s just a thought…

The STUPIDITY of Status Quo Thinking…

Have you ever noticed that to succeed in life, what you need to do is the exact OPPOSITE of what the masses do?

Because lets face it…

If you model the masses with regards to your health, you have a 1 in 2 chance of dying of heart disease, a 1 in 3 chance of dying of cancer, and a 4 in 5 chance of being overweight.

If you model the masses with regards to intimate relationships you have a 1 in 2 chance of a first divorce, and if you marry again a 3 in 4 chance of a second divorce!

And if you model the masses with regards to finances, you are in BIG trouble!

You have a 19 in 20 chance of retiring without enough to live on with support from family, friends or the state.

This is what I call the ’stupidity of staus quo thinking’

Because the fact is, you’d be better off looking at whatever the masses doing and doing the exact opposite.

And there is nowhere this is more true than with your coaching/training/consulting business.

I mean lets be honest here, if you follow the crap thats taught by the cookie cutter coaching schools, you’re gonna end up the same as the other 95% of so called ‘coaches’ out there, with NO CLIENTS!

- Giving away free sessions - HIGHLY INEFFECTIVE
- Using the GROW model - OUTDATED AND INFERIOR
- Calling yourself a ‘life coach’ - YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER SHEEP IN THE HERD!

Get with reality, the world has changed virtually beyond recognition in the last 10 years ( think before facebook (’04), youtube (’05), iPods (’01), 9/11 (’01), George W Bush (’01-’09), credit crunch (’07-’10) ), and yet the mass coaching schools are still herding in thousands of niave clients each year and teaching the same antiquated novel that barely worked when coaching was ‘new’

Listen, I’m all for training new coaches and getting these life changing skills out in the world, but most have inferior coaching skills, no experience and as for turning it into a business, well its like lambs to the slaughter.

The fact of the matter is this…

If you don’t get with the program and adopt the new paradigm of how to market yourself and attract clients in 2010, you might as well give up and go and get yourself a J.O.B.

You need to learn;

- Internet marketing
- Social media
- Running your own seminars/workshops
- Creating your own products
- Building a list

But most importantly of all, you need to know how to differentiate yourself from everybody else out there, so you are most definitely NOT ‘just another coach’

    Like it or not, you are a reflection of the people you surround yourself with.

    Surround yourself with sad, lonely, fat, broke people, and you’ll wind up sad, lonely, fat and broke!

    Surround yourself with happy, fun, fit and wealthy people, and you’ll be happy, fun, fit and wealthy!

    It aint exactly rocket science…

    I go to great pains to construct my personal environment, interacting with those few people who I want to be like, and shutting out those I do not want to be like.

    This, obviously, requires evaluation.  One of the ways I evaluate people is by how they spend their time.

    You see, the only thing limited in this life is our time .  We can’t get more of it, and have less and less left everyday. Everything else we can get more of… time, we cannot.

    So, if someone spends all their time whining and bitching about things without ever taking action to correct them, I keep them away from my life.  But if they spend their time constructively, living life on their terms, learning, having fun and contributing, then they’re someone I want to be around.

    Time wasters, time killers, and time vampires are poisonous.
    They’ll drain you of your most precious resource because they don’t value theirs.

    When you identify a time waster, cut them out, immediately.
    They contribute nothing, and cause great damage.

    Time wasters are talkers, not doers.  They talk and waste time instead of acting because they are afraid to face the consequences of their actions- much easier to talk.

    Doers welcome the consequences of their actions because they know acting gets them closer to where they want to be, and by acting they maximize the time they are given.

    How people spend their time is how they’ll spend YOUR time.

    Choose wisely, cos’ your decision will only affect you for the rest of your life!

    If you lie down with dogs, you come up with fleas…

    Are you an energy vampire?

    Want to know a secret about client attraction that apparently few coaches know?

    You would?  Well, then, listen closely and I’ll tell you–it’s very powerful…

    Here it is:  be an exciting and inspiring person to be around!

    Bloody obvious, I know.  BUT… apparently few coaches do.

    You see, most coaches are so negative, boring or miserable  (or worse!) that when people meet somone who’s interesting, happy and inspiring to be around… and if he/she has just a few skills to help them achieve the same result, they feel COMPELLED to know more.

    One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is they take coaching way too seriously.  At its core, coaching is all about helping others to get their goals and to ENJOY the process! (Profound I know!)

    People love people who inspire them and make them feel good, period!

    They love people who laugh easily, who don’t take themselves too seriously, and who just want to get everything they can out of life

    I know it sounds really basic, but the vast majority of coaches miss out on this important truth.  In fact, I know countless coaches who
    can quote you chapter and verse when it comes to coaching, NLP, etc but THEY HAVE NO CLIENTS!

    The reason?  They’re as boring, miserable and low energy and if there is one thing people cant stand it’s people who are ENERGY VAMPIRES (You know what I mean)

    So whatever you do, don’t be boring. Be a fun, be happy, be inspiring …and you’ll attract more great clients than you know what to do
    with!

    My Goals for 2010

    What are your goals for 2010?

    I believe there are 3 primary reasons why most people fail miserably at achieving their goals and realising their dreams;

    1) Lack of a compelling enough purpose or ‘reason why’ achieving the goal is a must
    2) Lack of accountability to stick to their goals from friends/colleagues/family when times get tough
    3) Lack of an empowering peer group and/or mentors to ’show you the way’

    So having spent the day getting clairty on number 1) yesterday I’ve decided to post my goals here to a) publicly declare my goals and thus hold myself accountable and b) inspire you to do the same!

    The stuff below is an abbreviated version of a process my closest friends and I do every year. It’s our own version of an exercise in the book ‘The Best Year Yet’…

    Seeing the birth of my beautiful baby girl and hearing her cry when doctors said she wouldn’t be able to breath

    This is one of my favourite exercises. The question you ask yourself is what ‘daily disciplines’ could I adopt that if I did them consistantly would cause my to achieve all my goals effortlessly…

    4 litres green drink/fresh juice
    write/review daily RPM plan

    I cried my eyes out last night

    Ok, so its not very manly to admit it, but I cried my eyes out last night

    I’d come up from the office (we have a 3 story house with the ground floor converted to offices) to find Lucie visibly upset

    It turns out she’d been reading stories on http://www.uk-cherubs.org.uk/ of babies who’d had the same condition as our daughter Summer (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia) but hadn’t survived.

    Despite me not wanting to, something inside me felt COMPELLED to read some.

    And it’s a good job I did!

    As I read name after name of babies who had sadly passed away (somwhere between 33-50% of babies with the condition die at birth or shortly after) it reminded me of how totally and utterly eternally grateful I am for my baby girl.

    It certainly but my ‘problems’ into perspective. (Lucie says I was particularly grumpy yesterday!) ;o)

    But as I continued to read, I noticed a very, very interesting pattern…

    Whether the story was of a baby who survived or not, they nearly all mentioned the same thing…

    The love, care and support the families got from the NURSES.

    Here are some of the most dedicated, hardworking and caring men and women on the planet, literally working on the front line, saving children’s lives every day and yet what do they get in return…?

    An absolute pittance!

    And that’s when I got a crazy idea…

    I realised that despite putting on the most incredible NLP & Coaching Business Conference last September and raising over £31,000 for the Tiny Babies, Big Appeal Charity…..

    It’s just not enough.

    I want more.

    They DESERVE more.

    So whilst the idea kind of scares the crap out of me, it’s time to step up.

    I want to raise £50,000+ to help the nurses and carers who support families with sick children.

    When you have no money, a little can mean a LOT.

    I have no real concept of HOW I’m going to do this, I’m not clear on exactly how I’ll use the money to help these angels (I also know there is lots of red tape when it comes to giving to nurses after trying to ‘help out’ a nurse who looked after Summer), but I do know this…

    I WILL find a way.

    So here’s what I’ve decided to do…

    On 30-31 January 2010 I will host a 2 day seminar called ‘The Client Attraction System: How to get more coaching clients than you could ever handle’

    It will be the very best seminar I have ever done.

    The best speakers

    The best experience

    Period.

    I’m going to present you with a line up of speakers who are changing the world, impacting peoples lives in a positive wat AND are literally flooded with more clients than they could handle.

    Wait, wait, WAIT!

    I’ve just had an even better idea…

    On the Saturday night we’re going to have a black tie dinner and charity auction (plus another surprise that I don’t want to reveal just yet!)

    In order to raise my target of £50,000 I’m either going to have to get more people than last time (there were 300 at the last event), or ask for a bigger donation per person (it was between £97-£197 last time), or both.

    So I have a simple question for you…
