Last week I sent an email out about a CD called, “Creating the Ultimate Coaching Business” The offer was pretty simple, cover the £1.10 postage and packing and I’ll send it to you.

When I made the offer, a guy ordered that very CD (Creating the Ultimate Coaching Business) and upon getting confirmation of his order emailed us to say how excited he was to get it as he’s been trying ‘for years’ to get his coaching business off the ground and find ‘proper, paying clients’
Now, a lot of coaches (veterans and newbies) took me up on that offer, and doubtless most of them are going to get the CD, listen to it, take action and get results.
But this particular individual apparently wanted no part of that - too much work, I suppose. Either that, or he prefers to remain without any paying clients.
You see, within 48 hours of ordering he called and left a rather rude message, unhappy he hadn’t received his order. (he ordered on a Saturday!)
Then, when one of my team called him back he ranted and raved and demanded his £1.10 back!!!
He was, she said, rude, obnoxious and aggressive. I have other words for this kind of behavior, but I simply told her to be polite and immediately give him his £1.10 back (every penny) and delete him from the database permanently.
I don’t tolerate that kind of toxic behaviour in my life, it drains all your energy and prevents you from serving the people who are open to being helped and help themselves.
I’m also willing to bet this individual is mystified as to why he does not have any clients. And I am equally sure he does not make the
connection between his behaviour and his lack of paying clients.
Therein lies the problem. While this guy is a blatantly obvious example, many coaches do not make the connection between their behavior
and their business results. No matter if you’re a complete ass (like this guy) or a really, really ‘nice’ person, there is an undeniable, definite link
between your behavior and your business results.
While it can be painful, if you’re not getting the results you want, the first thing you need to do is sit down and examine your own behavior, looking for behaviors and habits that may be keeping you from getting clients and
growing your business.
They will probably not be as egregious as this person’s, but they don’t have to be. If you don’t identify them and change them, you’re not going to get or keep any clients. But if you do, you’ll find it easy and effortless…

Normally, I’m outgoing, friendly and a very good communicator and networker. The problem is, when I’m at my local BNI or a networking meeting and somebody expresses an interest in my coaching, my mind goes blank. It’s almost like my brain locks and we end up having a very generic discussion about coaching, rather than if I can help them and making them a client. How do I overcome this?

I think your problem is really pretty simple.
You are experiencing something that I went through hundreds of times. In fact, I think that most coaches have been through this cycle at some point in life.
One of the concepts that I teach is “Have one good default thing to do in common situations”.
In other words, it sounds to me like you just haven’t taken the time to work out a basic system for yourself that will allow you to naturally engage and convert potential clients you come across in one of these situations.
Here’s your homework:
Take out a piece of paper right now, and write down just one way to take a conversation with a potential client from ‘interested’ to free inital session, arrange a meeting, or whatever your outcome would be.
Next, plan out EXACTLY how it should go in your mind.
Next, mentally rehearse this scenario over and over and over until you have it clearly in your mind.
Finally, go to your next potential networking meeting and use this one introduction to engage 10 potential clients.
The next day, sit down again for a few minutes and think about how it worked for you.
Think about ways you could improve your approach, and if you come up with some good innovations, go ahead and do the same process of mentally rehearsing the new ideas until you have them down.
One thing that really makes me cringe is that MOST COACHES SPEND MORE TIME REHEARSING THEIR VOICEMAIL MESSAGE THAN THEY DO REHEARSING SCENARIOS WITH POTENTIAL CLIENTS.
You need one good, solid, default thing to do in each common situation with potential clients. So pick one, and refine it until your mind no longer goes blank!

Hey Dan, one of the things I noticed about coaches who can’t get any clients/training/etc is that they aren’t actively seeking out business enough. Having your own business as a coach makes you realize that you have to let people know about your product, you. I am always amazed by coaches who complain they can’t get any clients and then stay home and read a personal development book rather than getting out there and meeting people.

Sometimes I don’t mention the obvious enough.
And I thank you for reminding me and everyone else of one of the basic fundamental truths about being successful in coaching.
A great concept I learned from a smart guy called Mark Layder was ‘IPA’s’ or ‘Income Producing Activity’. As the name suggests, an IPA is any activity that produces income, either immediately or over time. So all marketing, networking, holding seminars, giving away a free report, etc falls in this category. Paperwork, admin, etc does not! Networking counts as an IPA only when you’ve got a specific outcome and strategy for converting it into income (see above)
The bottom line is most coaches, trainers etc think that they are working, when really they are just wasting time. I can pretty much guess you income if I know how much time per DAY you spend on IPA’s. (HINT: It should take up the majority of your working day)

I have to say first and foremost that you are a genius. While I have had some paying coaching clients, it never dawned on me the reason that I was never able to leave my job and have a full time coaching business was because I acted uncertain, and was too wishy-washy with leads.
I am not a very experienced coach, but my cleints have all described my coaching as fantastic, best ever, etc (consequently, I have realized that how good a coach you are has very, very little to do with being successful).
I have been putting your marketing tactics from the coaches code to work lately and I have to admit they work like a dream, as I have gone from 3 to 11 paying clients in less than 30 days! I use online forums in my niche to start conversations with prospects and ask them some great questions and then go on to ask them if they are interested in having coaching. Most of the time they say “maybe, but I don’t have the money right now” (or something similar)
Now this is an important point for a lot of your readers. Everyone, listen up…
Just because a prospect says they don’t have the money doesn’t mean it’s true!
I have found on numerous occasions that that they just say that because they are not sure or don’t want to be sold to, but when you get talking to them about their needs, what their biggest goals are and what’s getting in the way, etc they forget about money and sign right up!

NOBODY WANTS COACHING!!! What they want is an outcome, either the achievement of a goal or the solution to a problem because they belief that will give them the feelings they want!
Your job and your only job at this stage is to show them how coaching with you will help them get their outcome, more quickly and more easily than they ever thought possible.
Whenever two people meet, one person always influences the other
The person with the most certainty wins…
Your email is great. It should be read 10 times by any coach who is learning about this stuff, and memorized.

The number 1 question I get asked without doubt is ‘how can I get more
clients?’ or some variation of that.
It’s really quite simple;
You must learn how to attract clients to want to buy from you, rather than
you trying to sell yourself to them.
Once you understand a couple of key principles that allow you to cause
clients to be drawn towards you and feel compelled to buy from you
The keys to doing that are;
Step One: Decide on Your Target or Niche Market
This is essential. In today’s society, more and more coaches are becoming
qualified. It’s never been more important than right now to put yourself
head and shoulders above the rest. Now there are a couple of ways to
do this, but by far the quickest and easiest - especially when you’re getting
started - is to have a really tightly defined niche market because the quickest
way to be the number one person in your marketplace is to be the only
person in your marketplace.
So rather than trying to be a life coach and competing with the tens of
thousands of other life coaches out there, it’s far more effective to be a
coach that specialises in a specific area.
Step Two: Position Yourself as the Number One Expert in That Niche
Often times just having a tightly defined niche will do this for you, but if you
can become ‘the’ person that solves that particular problem, you’ll have
people flocking to you, chequebook in hand and price becomes irrelevant.
(almost!)
The fastest way to do this (after niching) by the way is either doing live
seminars/workshops, appearing in the press, or creating your own products
for sale.
There are 4 other essential steps, but those first two should start you in
the right direction!

Thanks for all your emails, they really help keep me going. About a month
ago ordered Creating the Ultimate Coaching Biz and just wanted to let you
know how I am getting on.
As soon as I received the CD I put it on in the car and listened to it on the
way to work. (I’m working right now until I find enough coaching clients to
quit my job) I particularly loved the bit about the ‘rule of 5′ and decided to
put it to action straight away. I immediately did the exercise and within a
week I had an additional 3 clients!!! So as I had 5 clients I raised my price
by £20 (from £45-£65 p/h) and just by asking for referrals and telling clients
that my price would go up again as soon as I got to 10 clients almost every
single person I spoke to that week became an ongoing coaching client
paying for 3 months in advance!
I now have 12 paying coaching clients, 2 of which are paying my new rate of
£90 p/h! I know that’s not a lot compared to some people, but for me I’m
absolutely over the moon!
My new goal is to get up to 20 pay clients by the end of July, my rates up to
£130, but more importantly my confidence is at an all time high and I really
feel that I deserve it.

The Rule of Five is such a simple strategy, yet its incrediblely powerful for building
your own sense of self worth, as well as being able to ask a client to sign up with
confidence.
NB: for those of you who havent seen the rule of 5, you can watch a quick video I

There are just 2 very important points I want to make…
1. KEEP GOING! Keep raising those prices. Most people start to get uncomfortable
once they reach a certain financial level… don’t! It’s counter intuitive, but not only
the more you charge the easier you’ll find it to attract clients to you, but also you’ll
find that you keep having to step up and will become an even better coach in the
process.
2. LEVERAGE. Depending on your personal outcome, you’ll soon get to a point when
you’re overloaded with 1-1 clients and it can feel too much, whatever price you’re
charging. Start thinking about how you can leverage yourself through group coaching,
seminars, workshops, products, etc. (as a blatant plug, if you do want to leverage
yourself more effectively I’d strongly recommend checking out ‘The Coaches Code’
at
My main business is hypnotherapy and as such, if I am doing my job well, then the
client will not need to come back. My coaching also incorporates hypnotherapy, with
a view to removing obstacles to success permanently for the client. Therefore repeat
business from a client is not the desirable outcome. How do we build a successful
and growing business which does not rely on keeping the same clients over time?

Interesting question…
There are only 3 ways to grow the sales of any business;
a) increasing the number of clients
b) increasing the amount of money they spend with each purchase (either higher
priced items, more items or both)
c) increasing the frequency of purchase
Ironically the hardest of these to do is a) and yet thats why 95% of coaches spend
95% of their time!
Madness.
Anyway, I fundamentally disagree with your train of thought. Whilst I agree if you’ve
truly ‘done the job’ you wouldnt want the client to come back for that particular
issue, if its worked, the client should be so thrilled you should immediately find out
what other issues do they want to get similar spectacular results with!?
However, if you don’t feel that works for you, I have another option that you should
be applying regardless.
Referrals
Referrals has to be one of the most powerful marketing tools out there. Make it part
of everything you do. Once the client is in a peak state having got the result, ask
‘who do you know that would also like help with X?’
Better yet, tell the client up front before the session that you are a referral based
practice and if they get the result they are after would they be willing to refer and/or
give a testimonial. At this point its only a hypothetical question so most clients will
say ‘yes’ without batting an eyelid, so when you ask them after the session it’s even
easier.
Multiple asking opportunities is also beneficial. i.e. ask them at the session (best
option), but also follow up via email/phone as well, and you’ll get significantly
better results.
As a final thought, its also well worth considering incentivising them for the referral,
e.g. an extra discount of their next session for them or their referral, give it to them
as a voucher (with an expiry date within 30 days - this is critical) and you’ll soon see
lots more people strolling into your practice.
