<p>I&#8217;m a secret fiction writer.</p>
<p>I actually wrote a science fiction novel when I was 14. (very sad I know!)</p>
<p>I used to spend most break and lunchtimes in my schools rather antiquated computer room typing up my ideas. (I actually also wrote a stand up comedy monologue based upon the escapades of Princess Diana, but that&#8217;s another story!)</p>
<p>And whilst my genre of choice has changed several times over the years (back in a spiritual, &#8216;Celestine Prophecy&#8217; type phase at the moment in case you&#8217;re wondering), I&#8217;ve always been fascinated by words and language.</p>
<p>So just yesterday, I found myself on a blog of a VERY well known person in his field, reading what can only be described as a &#8216;rant&#8217; over how &#8220;Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code is a terrible writer and a total hack!&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>&#8230;er&#8230;..I beg your pardon!? </strong></p>
<p>To the best of my knowledge, Dan Brown&#8217;s books have sold over 200 million copies!</p>
<p>Needless to say, that&#8217;s roughly 200 million more copies than the blogs owner has sold.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the point&#8230;</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll take real life &#8216;what works&#8217; over &#8216;perfect in theory&#8217; any day of the week.</p>
<p>Now if the blog owners goal is to write the most perfect literary masterpiece even written and get worldwide critical acclaim from his peers, admittedly he probably does NOT want to be modelling from Dan Brown.</p>
<p>However&#8230;</p>
<p>If his desire is to get his written works shared by exceptionally large numbers of people in dozens of different countries around the world and become a multi, multi millionaire in the process, then instead of criticizing, he just &#8216;might&#8217; have something to learn from Dan.</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s how this relates to you&#8230; </strong></p>
<p>Virtually every day I receive emails from coaches, trainers, speakers, etc (or people who want to be one those things), and they&#8217;re bitching and complaining about things that, in my opinion, are at best semi-trivial, at worst entirely irrelevant and a total waste of time!</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re reading this message, it&#8217;s almost certainly because you&#8217;re interested in building a highly profitable coaching, training, consulting or speaking business in some way shape or form.</p>
<p>So when you&#8217;re looking around deciding the next place you&#8217;re going to invest in yourself and develop your skills (you do continuously invest in yourself dont you?), ask yourself this simple question&#8230;..</p>
<p><strong><em>&#8220;Has the person teaching this material actually achieved the results I want?&#8221; (or alternatively &#8216;have they helped others to get the results I want)<br />

The world is full of self proclaimed gurus who have absolutely no real sense of &#8216;what works&#8217; in the real world. And if you&#8217;re not very careful they will lead you a looong way down the &#8216;wrong&#8217; road. (even if there intention is good)</p>
<p>You&#8217;re not looking for a food critic, what you want is a chef who eats their own cooking and doesn&#8217;t get sick!</p>

<p style="text-align: left"> <span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">They  were very much alike, these two men. Both wanted to make a difference  in the world, both were friendly and people focused, and both had big  dreams for their future businesses as coaches.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">They  vowed to stay in touch, but as the years rolled by they gradually lost  contact, until recently when they ran into each other at an event out at  Heathrow.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">They  were still very much alike. Both were happily married. Both had  children. And unlike many who attended the same coach training program,  both had started coaching businesses AND were still in business, despite  the tips and turns of the economy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">Both also had excellent reputations for being great coaches.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">But there was ONE <span style="text-decoration: underline">striking</span> difference&#8230;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">One of the men worked in his business 40-50 hours a week, and made a modest income for his family. (around £25k)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">The  other spent more time with his family than he did working, and enjoyed a  seven figure business with a mid six figure personal income.</span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff"><strong><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">What Made The Difference?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">Have you ever wondered, as I have, what makes this kind of difference in people&#8217;s lives?</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">The  first man had become a master of his craft&#8230; while the second man had  become a master at bringing in new clients, getting bigger deals, and  ultimately helping more people.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">The  first man took pride in doing every job himself - he had to make sure  it was done right&#8230; while the second man - with his higher revenues -  took pride in hiring highly skilled people to be a part of his team and  be excellent in areas he was weak.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">The  first man&#8217;s business was his life, it constantly interfered with his  relationships and his health&#8230;. while the second man&#8217;s business enabled  him to create the lifestyle he dreamed of ten years ago.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium"><strong>How do I know this? </strong></p>
<p>&#8230;Because the second man in the story is me. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">But here&#8217;s the reason why I tell you this true story&#8230;<br />
<span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium"><br />
This exact same story will be repeated in hundreds of lives in the next few years.<br />
<span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">Many  new coaches, trainers, consultants and speakers will start and run  businesses&#8230; only to struggle to find the clients, struggle to make  ends meet and either stay trapped in a job they hate, not being able to  make the leap or worse having to go back to the job they left because  they can no longer pay the bills.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">If  they&#8217;re lucky, perhaps they&#8217;ll make a bit more money than they did at  their former job&#8230; but with more stress and work along with it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">But a small handful of coaches trainers consultants and speakers (CTCS&#8217;s) will go about things differently.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">This small handful of CTCS&#8217;s will&#8230;</span><br />
</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium; background-color: #ffffff"><br />
Position themselves as the dominant player in their industry - the one people go to FIRST when seeking the service they provide</p>
<p>Become one of the &#8220;big boys&#8221; that scoop up 80% of the available  clients&#8230; while the small fish who don&#8217;t know any better compete with  each other for the scraps</p>
<p>Set up their businesses so they not only run themselves (products,  memberships, etc)&#8230; but grow on their own&#8230; increasing net profits  year after year while the CTCS spends LESS time actually working</p>
<p>But perhaps most exciting&#8230; they&#8217;ll do it without working any harder than the others&#8230; and while having a whole lot more fun!</span><span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium; background-color: #ffff99"><span style="background-color: #ffffff"></p>
<p>And the way they will do it&#8230; will be with MARKETING. </span></p>

<p>I WAS relying on our two young children to act as alarm clocks as they are every morning at around 7am. Unfortunately for me for the first time ever thy BOTH decided to sleep in, so I overslept and almost missed the flight! (how could they be so irresponsible!? :O)</p>

<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   If you model the masses with regards to your health, you have a 1 in 2   chance of dying of heart disease, a 1 in 3 chance of dying of cancer, and   a 4 in 5 chance of being overweight.   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   If you model the masses with regards to intimate relationships you have   a 1 in 2 chance of a first divorce, and if you marry again a 3 in 4 chance   of a second divorce!   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   And if you model the masses with regards to finances, you are in BIG trouble!   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   You have a 19 in 20 chance of retiring without enough to live on with   support from family, friends or the state.   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   <strong>This is what I call the &#8217;stupidity of staus quo thinking&#8217;   </strong>   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   Because the fact is, you&#8217;d be better off looking at whatever the masses   doing and doing the exact opposite.   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   And there is nowhere this is more true than with your coaching/training/consulting   business.   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   I mean lets be honest here, if you follow the crap thats taught by the   <font size="4">cookie cutter coaching schools</font>   , you&#8217;re gonna end up the same as the other 95% of so called &#8216;coaches&#8217;   out there, i.e., with NO CLIENTS!   </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #800000"><strong><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large">   - Giving away free sessions - HIGHLY INEFFECTIVE   </span></strong></span><br />
<span style="color: #800000"><strong><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large">   - Using the GROW model - OUTDATED AND INFERIOR   </span></strong></span><br />
<span style="color: #800000"><strong><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large">   - Calling yourself a &#8216;life coach&#8217; - YOU&#8217;RE <span style="background-color: #ffff00">JUST ANOTHER SHEEP IN THE HERD!   </span></span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   Get with reality, the world has changed virtually beyond recognition in   the last 10 years (   <strong>think before facebook (&#8217;04), youtube (&#8217;05), iPods (&#8217;01),   9/11 (&#8217;01), George W Bush (&#8217;01-&#8217;09), credit crunch (&#8217;07-&#8217;10)</strong>   ), and yet the mass coaching schools are still herding in thousands of   niave clients each year and teaching the same antiquated novel that barely   worked when coaching was &#8216;new&#8217;   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   Listen, I&#8217;m all for training new coaches and getting these life changing   skills out in the world, but most have inferior coaching skills, no experience   and as for turning it into a business, well its like lambs to the slaughter.   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   The fact of the matter is this&#8230;   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   If you don&#8217;t get with the program and adopt the new paradigm of how to   market yourself and attract clients in 2011/2012, you might as well give up   and go and get yourself a J.O.B.   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   You need to learn;   </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   - Internet marketing   </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   - Social media   </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   - Running your own seminars/workshops   </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   - Creating your own products   </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   - Building a list   </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium">   - Plus many, more</p>
<p>But of all of them, the most important are  BUILDING A LIST OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE WHAT YOU DO, and (perhaps even more  importantly) building a RELATIONSHIP with that list.</p>
<p>This is the  most important asset your business posseses. Think about it, products  can be replaced, seminars redone, logos recreated, but ultimately it is  your CUSTOMERS who pay for everything!</p>
<p>Simply put, NO CUSTOMERS = NO BUSINESS!</p>
<p>The  problem is, very few CTCs (coaches, trainers, consultants) know HOW to  build a list of raving fan customers, even fewer have actually done it.</p>
