I put this post on my facebook wall recently that stirred up a bit of a fuss… “Most coaches dont get clients, not 4 a lack of skill, but because they were taught
the Free Session model that never worked in the 1st place!”
Put bluntly, the ‘free session’ model (where you give away a coaching session with
the aim of getting them to sign up for more sessions) that most coaching schools
teach as a way for new coaches to get clients is about as effective as a chocolate teapot.
When I first got started in coaching I did literally HUNDREDS of free sessions, with
minimal success.
Every week I would spend HOURS on the phone with prospective clients, giving value,
HOPING that if I just give enough value maybe, just maybe someone would be willing to
sign up for my coaching.
The most devastating thing about it was I did get some success, just enough to ‘keep the faith’ in this ridiculously ineffective and flawed business model, so I would spend another 3 or 4 hours that day giving free sessions to potential clients who;
a) didnt value what I had to offer
b) werent really commited to taking action
and
c) HAD ABSOLUTELY NO INTENTION OF BUYING MY COACHING!
If you want to really make a difference in the world, inspire people and help them to
transform their lives, the free session model is NOT the best approach.
Frankly, you have a better chance opening the Gordon Brown school of charm!
So what is the answer?
You need two things…
1) You need to be able to get your message in front of enough of the RIGHT people
2) You need your message to be influential enough to inspire them to take action
Or to put it another way…
1) You need to be able to get interested people to your website
2) You need to give the massive value in a LEVERAGED way, so the want to spend
money with you!
Historically this was very difficult, time consuming and expensive.
However today, thanks to the internet and social media, it can be quick, VERY quick.
Look, if you really want to help people and get your gift out there, FREE SESSIONS
ARE NOT THE BEST WAY!
(Firstly, they are NOT free, they COST YOU time and energy!)
The most effective way is building a RELATIONSHIP with your potential clients by
ADDING MASSIVE VALUE in a time leveraged way (using Social media) BEFORE you
ask them for money!
That way you can reach the largest number of people possible without it costing you
any extra time.
The world has changed virtually beyond recognition in the last
10 years…
(think before facebook (’04), youtube (’05), iPods (’01),
9/11 (’01), George W Bush (’01-’09), credit crunch (’07-’10) )
… and yet most coaches, consultants and trainers are desperately clinging
on to the ‘old school’ way of doing things are getting clients.
The reality is, if you aint growing, you’re dying! If you try to win a formula one race using a car from 3 years ago you will lose. (Talking of which, well done Jenson Button on Sunday!)
If you try to win Wimbeldon using Boris Becker’s wooden racket, you’re going to struggle.
If you try to cook dinner using veggies bought 3 months ago….. well lets just say it won’t taste very nice!
And if you try to get clients and grow your business using old techniques that used to work, you’re going to go out of business. The world is changing at dizzying speed, and if you don’t stay ahead of the game you WILL be left behind.
That’s the bad news… The good news is, most people don’t bother.
And that means if you get AHEAD of the curve and use the latest approaches,
you will be able to multiply the number of clients you can attract, seminars you
can fill or products you can sell, easily and effortlessly.
What am I talking about here? The internet - and specifically, using it to get your message out to the world, grow your business, help people and making money in the process.
The truth is it’s never been easier to make a huge positive impact in the world than today, right NOW, because of the evolution of technology and power of
the internet.
The point being, you must, must, MUST leverage the power of the internet if you’re going to get your gift out to the world. It’s the fastest, easiest and most
profitable way to do so, IF you know HOW!
The challenge is most people are so overwhelmed, they don’t even know where to start.
It’s time to face the harsh reality that lies in front of you Dan…
Whilst the world today leaves coaches, consultants and trainers more opportunity to thrive than ever before (at least in theory), the fact of the matter is the market place has changed RADICALLY in the last 18 months…
Not only that, but the large coach training companies (you know who I mean) continue to churn out thousands upon thousands of ‘cookie cutter’ coaches every single year, all vying for the exact same batch of clients!
I smell trouble brewing…
And the facts of the matter go thus…
  - 1% of Coaches, Consultants, Trainers, etc get rich (think 7 figure annual income)
- 4% do very well (6 figures)
- 15% do ‘ok’ (make a modest living)
- 80% get little or ZERO income whatsoever from coaching
Which category do you fall into? I can tell you one thing, and that’s if you’re running around doing what all the other coaches out there are doing, you’re going wind up in the 80%, who are tired and frustrated (and hungry!)
But, here’s the really interesting bit…
The strategies to be in the top 5% are RADICALLY different than the ones that worked just 18 months ago.
What does all this mean to you?
Pay VERY close attention to the source of your ideas, strategies and beliefs around finding, getting and keeping clients, whether they be 1-1 coaching, workshop attendees, big corporate clients or buyers of your products.
‘Cos if you’re ‘flying blind’ you’ve got a 4 in 5 chance of failure.
If you’re learning from someone who had some success in the past , it wont work.
If you’re following the advice of a ‘cookie cutter’ coach trainer, ask them how many clients they have (NOT including the ones that come out of their coach training courses!)
If you want to model success, your only viable solution is to look at the (sadly very few) coaches, trainers and consultants who are actually out there in the field and DOING IT, in today’s market place.
As one of the UK’s highest paid coaches (current fees: £15k for 6 sessions, payable in advance, plus 9 month waiting list), let me tell you there are fundamentally only 4 ways to create wealth through coaching. There are other strategies, but ultimately the all slot into one of these 4 categories;
 1. One to One Coaching - You are trading time for money, but still can pay very well
 2. Corporate Coaching/Training - Still trading time for money, but once established you can get multiple clients/projects within one organisation and also the potential of valuable retainer based fees
3. Group Work - Including group coaching, seminars and workshops, your time is still required, but can be highly leveraged, significantly increasing your income for the same input required
 4. Products - The ultimate leverage. Once you have products on sale and a system for selling them, this is a legal license to print money! There are virtually no time or geographical constraints. What’s more, your products help establish you as an authority, which makes it easier to get more people on board for the first 3 options!
Most coaches (wrongly) start with number 1 then attempt to move to 2, 3 and 4, usually in that order.
This is an excrutiatingly slow and painful way to do it.
If you wish to be in the top 1% you should start with 3/4 and THEN go for 1/2
Ultimately, depending on your lifestyle preferences, you’d want to have income from all 4 sources. This is very easy to do when you follow the strategies, IN THE RIGHT ORDER!

Have you ever noticed that to succeed in life, what you need to do is the exact OPPOSITE of what the masses do?
Because lets face it…
If you model the masses with regards to your health, you have a 1 in 2 chance of dying of heart disease, a 1 in 3 chance of dying of cancer, and a 4 in 5 chance of being overweight.
If you model the masses with regards to intimate relationships you have a 1 in 2 chance of a first divorce, and if you marry again a 3 in 4 chance of a second divorce!

I mean lets be honest here, if you follow the crap thats taught by the cookie cutter coaching schools, you’re gonna end up the same as the other 95% of so called ‘coaches’ out there, with NO CLIENTS!
- Giving away free sessions - HIGHLY INEFFECTIVE
- Using the GROW model - OUTDATED AND INFERIOR
- Calling yourself a ‘life coach’ - YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER SHEEP IN THE HERD!

This, obviously, requires evaluation. One of the ways I evaluate people is by how they spend their time.
You see, the only thing limited in this life is our time . We can’t get more of it, and have less and less left everyday. Everything else we can get more of… time, we cannot.
So, if someone spends all their time whining and bitching about things without ever taking action to correct them, I keep them away from my life. But if they spend their time constructively, living life on their terms, learning, having fun and contributing, then they’re someone I want to be around.
Time wasters, time killers, and time vampires are poisonous.
They’ll drain you of your most precious resource because they don’t value theirs.
When you identify a time waster, cut them out, immediately.
They contribute nothing, and cause great damage.
Time wasters are talkers, not doers. They talk and waste time instead of acting because they are afraid to face the consequences of their actions- much easier to talk.
Doers welcome the consequences of their actions because they know acting gets them closer to where they want to be, and by acting they maximize the time they are given.
How people spend their time is how they’ll spend YOUR time.
Choose wisely, cos’ your decision will only affect you for the rest of your life!

Bloody obvious, I know. BUT… apparently few coaches do.
You see, most coaches are so negative, boring or miserable (or worse!) that when people meet somone who’s interesting, happy and inspiring to be around… and if he/she has just a few skills to help them achieve the same result, they feel COMPELLED to know more.
One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is they take coaching way too seriously. At its core, coaching is all about helping others to get their goals and to ENJOY the process! (Profound I know!)
People love people who inspire them and make them feel good, period!
They love people who laugh easily, who don’t take themselves too seriously, and who just want to get everything they can out of life
I know it sounds really basic, but the vast majority of coaches miss out on this important truth. In fact, I know countless coaches who
can quote you chapter and verse when it comes to coaching, NLP, etc but THEY HAVE NO CLIENTS!
The reason? They’re as boring, miserable and low energy and if there is one thing people cant stand it’s people who are ENERGY VAMPIRES (You know what I mean)
So whatever you do, don’t be boring. Be a fun, be happy, be inspiring …and you’ll attract more great clients than you know what to do
with!

Last week I sent an email out about a CD called, “Creating the Ultimate Coaching Business” The offer was pretty simple, cover the £1.10 postage and packing and I’ll send it to you.

When I made the offer, a guy ordered that very CD (Creating the Ultimate Coaching Business) and upon getting confirmation of his order emailed us to say how excited he was to get it as he’s been trying ‘for years’ to get his coaching business off the ground and find ‘proper, paying clients’
Now, a lot of coaches (veterans and newbies) took me up on that offer, and doubtless most of them are going to get the CD, listen to it, take action and get results.
But this particular individual apparently wanted no part of that - too much work, I suppose. Either that, or he prefers to remain without any paying clients.
You see, within 48 hours of ordering he called and left a rather rude message, unhappy he hadn’t received his order. (he ordered on a Saturday!)
Then, when one of my team called him back he ranted and raved and demanded his £1.10 back!!!
He was, she said, rude, obnoxious and aggressive. I have other words for this kind of behavior, but I simply told her to be polite and immediately give him his £1.10 back (every penny) and delete him from the database permanently.
I don’t tolerate that kind of toxic behaviour in my life, it drains all your energy and prevents you from serving the people who are open to being helped and help themselves.
I’m also willing to bet this individual is mystified as to why he does not have any clients. And I am equally sure he does not make the
connection between his behaviour and his lack of paying clients.
Therein lies the problem. While this guy is a blatantly obvious example, many coaches do not make the connection between their behavior
and their business results. No matter if you’re a complete ass (like this guy) or a really, really ‘nice’ person, there is an undeniable, definite link
between your behavior and your business results.
While it can be painful, if you’re not getting the results you want, the first thing you need to do is sit down and examine your own behavior, looking for behaviors and habits that may be keeping you from getting clients and
growing your business.
They will probably not be as egregious as this person’s, but they don’t have to be. If you don’t identify them and change them, you’re not going to get or keep any clients. But if you do, you’ll find it easy and effortless…
