My Dirty Little Secret…

Here’s something I’ve never admitted to anyone

I’m a secret fiction writer.

I actually wrote a science fiction novel when I was 14. (very sad I know!)

I used to spend most break and lunchtimes in my schools rather antiquated computer room typing up my ideas. (I actually also wrote a stand up comedy monologue based upon the escapades of Princess Diana, but that’s another story!)

And whilst my genre of choice has changed several times over the years (back in a spiritual, ‘Celestine Prophecy’ type phase at the moment in case you’re wondering), I’ve always been fascinated by words and language.

So just yesterday, I found myself on a blog of a VERY well known person in his field, reading what can only be described as a ‘rant’ over how “Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code is a terrible writer and a total hack!”

…er…..I beg your pardon!?

To the best of my knowledge, Dan Brown’s books have sold over 200 million copies!

Needless to say, that’s roughly 200 million more copies than the blogs owner has sold.

Here’s the point…

I’ll take real life ‘what works’ over ‘perfect in theory’ any day of the week.

Now if the blog owners goal is to write the most perfect literary masterpiece even written and get worldwide critical acclaim from his peers, admittedly he probably does NOT want to be modelling from Dan Brown.

However…

If his desire is to get his written works shared by exceptionally large numbers of people in dozens of different countries around the world and become a multi, multi millionaire in the process, then instead of criticizing, he just ‘might’ have something to learn from Dan.

Here’s how this relates to you…

Virtually every day I receive emails from coaches, trainers, speakers, etc (or people who want to be one those things), and they’re bitching and complaining about things that, in my opinion, are at best semi-trivial, at worst entirely irrelevant and a total waste of time!

If you’re reading this message, it’s almost certainly because you’re interested in building a highly profitable coaching, training, consulting or speaking business in some way shape or form.

So when you’re looking around deciding the next place you’re going to invest in yourself and develop your skills (you do continuously invest in yourself dont you?), ask yourself this simple question…..

“Has the person teaching this material actually achieved the results I want?” (or alternatively ‘have they helped others to get the results I want)

The world is full of self proclaimed gurus who have absolutely no real sense of ‘what works’ in the real world. And if you’re not very careful they will lead you a looong way down the ‘wrong’ road. (even if there intention is good)

You’re not looking for a food critic, what you want is a chef who eats their own cooking and doesn’t get sick!
